When you meet Brian, one thing becomes clear pretty quickly. He’s not just running a program. He’s building futures.
Recently, we had the chance to spend some time with Brian at Bismarck State College / TrainND Southwest, where he walked us through their CDL training program. Standing in front of one of their advanced simulators, it was easy to see the pride he has in what they’ve built and where it’s going.
And honestly, it’s well earned.
Since launching in January 2021, the CDL program has grown from a single truck and trailer into a high-impact training operation that has helped more than 400 students earn their Class A CDL. That kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from intentional leadership, strong partnerships, and a real commitment to doing things the right way.
The results speak for themselves. With a 96% pass rate, the program consistently produces drivers who are prepared, confident, and ready to step into the industry.
But what really stands out isn’t just the numbers. It’s the people.
Brian and his team go beyond teaching the basics of operating a commercial vehicle. They act as mentors, helping students understand what a career in trucking actually looks like and how to succeed once they get there. From classroom instruction to simulator training to real-world driving, every step is designed to build both skill and confidence.
Students start by learning the fundamentals of safety and theory, then move into hands-on simulator work before getting behind the wheel. By the time they reach their final drive test, they’ve experienced everything from tight backing maneuvers to highway driving. They’re not just trained. They’re prepared.
The program has also created meaningful opportunities through its partnership with the North Dakota Department of Corrections. So far, 18 individuals transitioning back into the community have earned their CDL through this initiative, opening the door to stable careers and a fresh start. That’s the kind of impact that goes far beyond the classroom.
And from our perspective at Magnum, partnerships like this matter.
Brian has been a strong advocate for us, taking the time to understand what we’re looking for and helping identify candidates who are a great fit. One recent example is Alex, who Brian personally recommended. Alex is currently in training with us, and it’s already clear that the foundation he received through the program is making a difference.
That level of care and attention is what sets this program apart.
What started as one truck and a vision has grown into a premier CDL training program that is strengthening the workforce and creating real opportunities across the region. With a now expanded fleet of three trucks and continued demand, it’s clear that the momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
And if Brian has anything to say about it, it won’t.
