FINDING THE RIGHT TRUCKING COMPANY

5 Things to Consider

With thousands of trucking companies out there, choosing the right fit can be overwhelming.

Because every driver looks for different things, there is no single formula for finding the right company to start your driving career.

While time-consuming, every minute spent researching companies and speaking with recruiters will pay off in dividends once you find the perfect fit.

Here are 5 factors to consider while comparing companies that will help you start driving for a place that will make you happy.

1. Pay

Choosing a company based solely on pay or a hefty sign-on bonus is one of the biggest mistakes a driver can make. While pay is no doubt important, it is not everything!

As you begin your search for the perfect carrier, you’ll have to decide if you’re willing to sacrifice a few cents per mile to get other company qualities you desire.

2. Freight Type & Driving Style

What kind of freight do you want to haul? Dry van, reefer, flatbed, tanker – there are pros and cons to consider no matter what you are hauling.

The freight you haul will most likely coincide with your driving style. Do you need to be home every night to tuck the kids into bed, or does being on the road for weeks at a time give you a thrill?

Check out this article outlining the lifestyle and pay options that align with each type of freight.

3. Benefits

What kind of benefits are important to you, and what can you live without?

To protect yourself now and well into the future, it is a good idea to choose a company with an employment package that includes comprehensive insurance coverage, retirement plans and paid time off.

Any company willing to invest in a strong benefits package is likely going to be a company that values its drivers far beyond what they can do on the road.

4. Retention Rate

A company’s retention rate can be a strong indicator of employee satisfaction. Research how many drivers have spent 10, 15, 20+ years with the company.

When asked what he thought the most important thing drivers should look for when applying to companies, Magnum’s OTR Recruiter, Tony Doll said:

“Ask any company you are considering driving for what their turnover rate is. The national average turnover rate is around 98%, while Magnum’s turnover rate is around 60%. It’s something we’re always working toward — hiring the right drivers and building a team of drivers working toward a successful career with one company.”

5. Company Values

Lastly, a great way to distinguish two otherwise identical trucking companies  is by looking at their company values. Finding a company whose values align with your own is a surefire way to end up with a good fit.

To give an example, as a family- and veteran-owned company, Magnum is a good fit for drivers who value time spent with their family. Because we also share those values, we are committed to getting our drivers home for the important moments.

Truck driving is a very personal profession, so there is just not a one-size-fits-all approach to finding the right trucking company.

Ultimately, the most important factor for your success in the industry is YOU. If you do your research and follow these five considerations, you’ll be well on your way to a long and happy career.
