Faces of Magnum:

Tessi Teiken

Director of Human Resources, Tessi Teiken, has been with the company for over nine years, constantly working to evolve and enhance the workplace to keep up with industry trends and best practices.

Where are you from, and where did you go to school?

I grew up in Mahnomen, MN, near my dad’s family farm with my parents and five brothers. I grew up working in the floral and greenhouse business that my grandparents ran on the farm. I graduated from Mahnomen High School and furthered my education at Bemidji State and St. Cloud Tech.

I currently live in West Fargo, ND with my husband, Curt, and children, Charleigh and Holdyn. We enjoy spending time with our families at the lake, fishing, hunting, and playing games—whether it’s cards, board games, or outdoor activities.

What inspired you to work in the trucking or logistics industry?

New challenge with a new industry. My dad and some close family friends all drove a truck at one time in their career and my brother owned his own trucking company.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model?

Hard question, I have so many – My mom, my grandmothers, and my aunts were all big influences in my life. They taught me to cook, bake, and to be nurturing and kind.

My dad and brothers taught me how to work hard, stand up for myself and push hard to reach my goals (even for a girl).

What’s something about you most people don’t know?

I wanted to be an interpreter and took 3 years of American Sign Language.

What does a typical day in your role look like?

Never a dull moment. Phone calls, emails, meetings, reports, working with other team members on compliance, recruiting, and HR issues, to name a few.

What’s something unique about working at Magnum?

The multiple levels and divisions of the company.

What’s a work-related accomplishment you’re most proud of?

Being named Employee of the Year at a former company and acknowledgement from my peers and leadership.

How do you stay motivated during challenging times?

I talk it out with my boss or another coworker. Seeing a different perspective usually helps. Sometimes walking away and coming back to the challenge later.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

There is always more than one solution to a problem. Pick your battles.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Supporting my kids in all their activities, spending time with my large family, baking, reading, and being the #1 Auntie to all my nieces and nephews.

Do you have any hobbies or talents you’re passionate about?

Canning salsa, spaghetti sauce, and pickles every Fall with my best friend. If you ask my family, they will say that baking and cooking are my talents. I also enjoy letting my creative side out to design various things.

What’s a goal or dream you’re currently working on?

Working on a better me! Building my strengths, improving my weaknesses, and balancing my home and work life.
