International Women's Week in Transporation

This year International Women’s Week (IWW) is celebrated March 4-7 leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8. IWW has a rich history, dating back to the early 1900’s in some countries. However, it did not become an official holiday until 1980. This week is a time to celebrate the social, economic, and cultural achievements of women worldwide.

As we celebrate International Women’s Week, let us recognize the amazing women who play such crucial roles in the transportation industry. Women have had an on-and-off relationship with the transportation industry over the last century. During World War 2, Women had to step in to fill the labor gap while the Men went off to fight in the war. This included driving trucks, and other heavy machinery. After the war, women stepped back into a more traditional roles and the transportation industry became male-dominated again. However, in the 1980’s and 1990’s, advancements in technology and changes in regulations made it easier for women to enter the trucking industry. Trucking companies started to recruit women more frequently, and women started participating in trucking schools.

Today, nearly 47% of the trucking industry is made up of women. Despite the challenges that come with being a female in a male dominated industry, women continue to break the gender barrier and excel in this field. This includes drivers, dispatch, logistics, and everyone else that keeps things moving.
